Let’s face it; getting the first customer is not easy. You must be convincing enough to win them and where possible, recommendations can be very helpful. According to a survey by ‘freelancebusiness.eu’, 53.9% of jobs a freelancer get comes from repeat customers. This means that it does not matter the channel you use to get the clients, delivering an impressive service matters a lot.
First client attitude
Every customer to you meet for the first time should be treated as the first client. A client-first attitude is a philosophy that prioritizes the needs of the client over your needs. It’s based on values of compassion and care. By default, when you meet the first client you will adopt the following qualities:
- Putting yourself aside and focusing on client’s needs
- Being aware of your biases, expectations, and motives
- Listening actively and reflectively
- Letting the client lead the conversation
- Responding to feedback in a timely and respectful manner
- Showing that you care about and appreciate the client’s opinions
A client-first attitude can help you create an atmosphere of trust and goodwill with your customers, which will also influence recommendation.
What you can do to get the first client
Build an online presence: Create content that showcases your skills and expertise, such as a blog or social media profile. You can also join relevant online communities and freelance groups.
- Network: Attend events and conferences, or connect with other entrepreneurs as mentors. You may want to check online events, some of which may be free to attend. Today the world is an open market and selling services is not restricted by country boundaries.
- Find your niche: Focus on a specific area of expertise that’s you are well positioned to get client for. You can chose a niche based on a number of factors. I give details on my e-book ‘Foundation for the African Online freelancer’.
- Polish your portfolio: Build a reputation as an expert in your field. This is a never ending process. Keep working on it each time you get a chance to offer a service to a client.
- Work on your pitch: Develop a professional pitch to help you convince potential clients. Don’t be compulsive but give information to potential clients and let them decide on the next course of action.
- Start with people you know: It’s easier to convince people you already know to give you a try. You also will want to be accountable and deliver to the best of your capabilities.
- Try cold calling or emailing: You can try contacting potential clients directly. Social media can be a good place to start.
- Be visible: Remember, out of sight out of mind. If people don’t see you on social media, online when they search for services similar you yours, hear about you on other media platforms that support your service – they may think you have closed shop or are no longer interested in offering services.
- Be patient: It can take time to get your first client, so don’t get frustrated if you aren’t an overnight success.
Clients that you have served are likely to come back for more in future. The more clients you help and make them happy, the more the chances of having repeat business. In the process, you also sharpen your skills and grow.
